OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/27/2024, at approximately 4:00 p.m., Ventura County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to an armed robbery at the Good Nite Inn on Ventura Boulevard in Camarillo. Deputies identified a vehicle believed to be involved and attempted a traffic stop. The driver continued driving away, and deputies pursued.
During the pursuit, the fleeing vehicle drove onto the north shoulder of Central Avenue between Beardsley Road and Santa Clara Road and struck 57-year-old bicyclist Robert Eugene Pierret, who was riding home after finishing his shift at St. John's Hospital Camarillo. Deputies immediately rendered aid, but Pierret died at the scene. The fleeing vehicle continued a short distance before colliding with another vehicle, and the driver was taken into custody.
The California Highway Patrol investigated the fatal crash. Prosecutors later charged the driver with murder, robbery, evading police causing death, and other felony offenses related to the pursuit and Pierret's death.
