On 07/27/2024, deputies from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office were called to investigate an alleged attempted carjacking in Satsuma, Florida. Witnesses reportedly identified Phillip Allen Baldwin, 31, as the person involved. Deputies located Baldwin and claimed he “reached for his waistband,” after which multiple officers fired their weapons and killed him. Baldwin died at the scene.

On July 25, 2024, at approximately noon, a Saguache County Sheriff's Office deputy was driving near Crestone, Colorado, to serve legal papers. The deputy observed 40-year-old Jonathan Aaron Wood walking about a mile from the entrance of the Baca Grande Subdivision and recognized him as having active warrants, including a felony warrant in Saguache County for assault on a peace officer and a misdemeanor warrant in Mineral County for damaged property/criminal mischief.

The deputy attempted to contact Wood, who then attacked the deputy with a 4-foot metal pipe. In response, the deputy discharged his service weapon twice, striking Wood. On July 24, 2024, at approximately 7:30 p.m., officers from the Salina Police Department arrived at 544 N. 12th Street in Salina, Kansas, to execute an arrest warrant for 44-year-old Larry J. Wray Jr. Upon entering the detached garage east of the residence, officers arrested Larry Wray Jr. without incident. During the arrest, officers noticed another individual, later identified as 25-year-old Jesse D. Wray, inside the garage. When officers attempted to make contact, Jesse Wray displayed a firearm and threatened to shoot if they entered.

Officers established a perimeter and summoned the Salina SWAT Team for assistance. Troopers from the Kansas Highway Patrol also responded to the location of the home. While awaiting the SWAT team's arrival, officers observed smoke and flames emanating from the garage. The garage door then opened, and a female emerged with her hands raised, followed by Jesse Wray. Wray took cover behind a parked truck in the driveway, assuming a shooting stance with his hands extended toward the officers.

In response, two Salina Police Department officers discharged nine rounds, none of which struck Wray. Wray then moved to the west side of the garage, where he encountered additional officers and troopers. A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper and a Salina Police Department officer fired four shots, fatally wounding Wray. According to his mother, Preston was a private person who avoided social media and was protective of his privacy. He had been living in Four Winds apartment complex for two months and was known to be a quiet and respectful neighbor.

However, Preston's ex-girlfriend had a history of harassment and had previously kicked down his door with a friend, prompting Preston to call the police, according to his mother Yvonne Brown. Despite this, no action was taken.

On the night of the shooting, Preston's ex-girlfriend allegedly texted him repeatedly, but he didn't respond as he was with his new girlfriend. Yvonne Brown says someone called the police, claiming he was breaking into his home and was "armed and dangerous". Another narrative Yvonne states she received was that a neighbor called police for a noise disturbance.

Preston's mother claims that the police department has been uncooperative about the events leading up to the shooting. On July 21, 2024, at approximately 12:41 p.m., Fort Collins Police Services (FCPS) officers responded to a single-vehicle rollover crash at the intersection of Bryan Avenue and Mountain Avenue. The crash ended with Clayton Pierce standing outside the vehicle with a firearm.

On 07/21/2024, Pima County Sheriff’s deputies pursued a vehicle at high speeds in a case involving domestic violence, as the woman, Debra Murrieta, had been abducted by her boyfriend, William Holloway.
