On 07/28/2024, deputies with the Indian River County Sheriff's Office responded to a disturbance at the RaceTrac gas station in the 9400 block of 108th Avenue. A deputy had just completed an unrelated call nearby when he heard a disturbance in the RaceTrac parking lot and went to investigate.
According to the Sheriff's Office, Jeffrey Lee Miller, 42, approached the deputy while holding a knife. The deputy backed away as Miller continued toward him. The deputy then fired multiple shots, striking Miller. Deputies and arriving officers rendered medical aid, but Miller was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Sheriff's Office later released body-worn camera and surveillance video from the incident. According to investigators, Miller had been involved in a disturbance in the parking lot before the deputy arrived.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigated the shooting, consistent with state policy for deputy-involved shootings. As of the latest publicly available information, the identity of the deputy has not been released, and no public findings or prosecutorial determination regarding the use of force have been announced.
