OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/28/2024, Newport News Police Department officers responded after an armed robbery at a Navy Federal Credit Union. Officers located a vehicle believed to be connected to the robbery and conducted a high-risk traffic stop in the 3100 block of Radius Way.
Two occupants exited the vehicle and were taken into custody. A third occupant, identified as 39-year-old Stephan Allan Williams, exited while holding a handgun. According to police, Williams pointed the firearm toward officers, who then fired their weapons, striking him. Officers rendered medical aid until emergency medical personnel arrived, but Williams died at the scene.
The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation was requested to investigate the shooting, consistent with Virginia policy for officer-involved shootings. As of the latest publicly available information, the identities of the officers involved have not been released, and no criminal charges have been filed in connection with the shooting.
