OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/23/2024, Sacramento Police Department officers responded to a welfare check in the 3600 block of Jasmine Street after receiving a report that 51-year-old James Dalehart was under the influence of narcotics, threatening to harm himself, and armed with a knife. Officers encountered Dalehart holding a knife, which he threw into the street before running and entering a nearby parked vehicle.
Officers spent several minutes attempting to de-escalate the situation before removing Dalehart from the vehicle. He was handcuffed without reported use of force and placed in the rear seat of a patrol vehicle while officers requested Sacramento Fire Department personnel to evaluate him.
While waiting for medical personnel, Dalehart became unresponsive. Officers and firefighters provided emergency medical care before he was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Sacramento Police Department released body-worn camera footage, in-car video, dispatch audio, and narrated incident videos in August 2024. The death remains under investigation by the Sacramento Police Department's Homicide Unit, Internal Affairs Division, Professional Standards Unit, and Force Investigation Team, with oversight from the Office of Public Safety Accountability and the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office. As of the latest publicly available information, no cause of death has been publicly announced and no officers have been publicly identified.
