Thornton Police believed they recognized a man who had been involved in an assault at a gas station previously. He was identified as 27-year-old Gilberto Vazquez Carnero. When approached, he engaged in a struggle with an officer during which he attempted to grab the officer's gun. In the course of this altercation, the officer was injured, and another officer fatally shot Carnero at the scene.
