On 08/23/2025 at approximately 7:40 p.m., Milwaukee Police attempted to stop a vehicle connected to a non-fatal shooting near 60th Street and Meinecke Avenue. The driver continued, and police escalated a chase. The vehicle crashed at 51st Street and Center Street into another car. The driver of that car died at the scene. The pursued driver fled and police were unable to apprehend him.

On August 22, 2025, Phillip Francis Jr., 44, was killed by a gunshot at the Woodspring Suites hotel on Hugh Wallis Road in Lafayette, Louisiana. Former Lafayette Police Department officer Kyle Jagneaux, 39, was involved in an altercation with Francis that escalated to the shooting. Jagneaux was arrested and booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on a charge of manslaughter with bond set at $50,000. The officer was charged with manslaughter.

On August 22, 2025, deputies with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence on the 1400 block of Anchorage Circle in Seminole. Deputies found 58-year-old Kimberly King-Judd with a graze wound to the back of her head. She was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Her husband, 65-year-old Steven Grossman, remained inside the home armed. After deputies attempted negotiations, Grossman was found inside with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was transported to a hospital where he later died. Detectives are investigating the incident as a domestic violence case and possible attempted murder-suicide.

On 08/20/2025, Phoenix police responded to reports of a man armed with a hatchet near the 3700 block of East McDowell Road. The man was identified as 47-year-old Rocky Joe Ellis. On 08/16/2025, at approximately 11:40 p.m., Hays Police responded to a domestic violence call after a minor reported a man and woman fighting inside a home and that the man had a firearm. Two other minors were present. The man refused to let anyone leave, prompting a standoff with Hays PD, Kansas Highway Patrol, and a crisis negotiator. At 1:22 a.m., the adult woman exited with head trauma and was hospitalized. At 6:42 a.m., the minors were evacuated safely. Negotiators continued speaking with the man when officers heard a gunshot. At 8:15 a.m., he was found dead inside the home from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation.

The Land Rover lost control, left the roadway, struck a tree, and split in half, violently ejecting occupants. Mathew Benton, a 34-year-old passenger, was ejected and died from his injuries. Warrants allege Smith continued driving, failed to stop or render aid, and did not report the crash. Smith was later terminated and arrested; he faces felony charges including first-degree vehicular homicide, hit-and-run resulting in death, reckless driving, failure to report an accident, and violation of oath of office. The matter remains under criminal investigation.

On 08/17/2025, Shenandoah County deputies responded to a report of an alleged attempted sexual assault of a child at a residence on 1722 Alum Springs Road in Basye. Deputies encountered 28-year-old Hunter Dale Lee Runion. Police stated that Runion physically assaulted an officer with a pair of handcuffs and then attempted to disarm the deputy. The deputy opened fire, killing Runion. The case is pending investigation.

Around 5 a.m. on August 16, 2025, an Amelia County deputy attempted to stop a red Toyota Tacoma traveling at over 100 mph in a 55 mph zone on Route 360. The driver refused to stop, and the chase escalated into Nottoway County, joined by Virginia State Police and Nottoway deputies. The vehicle crashed into nearby woods at the intersection of Rocky Hill Road and eastbound Route 460. The driver fled on foot, and under unclear circumstances, troopers and deputies opened fire, killing him. A Nottoway County deputy was shot in the hand during the exchange and transported to a local hospital. The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Richmond Field Office, is conducting an investigation.
