On July 24, 2024, at approximately 3:30 a.m., Thornton Police Department officers responded to an assault at a gas station near Gale Boulevard and West Thornton Parkway. Officers identified him as 27-year-old Gilberto Velazquez Carnero and located him nearby.

An officer approached him, and they engaged in a physical altercation. During the struggle, Carnero attempted to seize the officer’s firearm. A second officer then fired his weapon, killing Carnero. The injured officer received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries and was later released.
