OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/24/2024, a Zavala County Sheriff's Office deputy assigned to Operation Lone Star attempted to stop a Chevrolet pickup truck on U.S. Highway 57 near La Pryor after observing a traffic violation. According to investigators, the driver continued driving away, and the deputy initiated a pursuit.
The pursuit continued at speeds approaching 80 mph before the driver left the highway, entered a private ranch, and crashed into a tree. The male driver, identified only as a Honduran national, died at the scene.
Deputies located four migrants near the crash site. Two sustained serious injuries and were transported by air ambulance to a hospital, while an unknown number of others fled the area.
The Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol investigated the crash.
