OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/22/2024, officers with the Florence Police Department and deputies with the Florence County Sheriff's Office responded to Brittany Place Apartments in the 1300 block of Brittany Drive to serve an arrest warrant for murder and a search warrant on 41-year-old Matthew Paul Berry.
According to investigators, Berry barricaded himself inside an apartment while officers attempted to take him into custody. Police reported that an exchange of gunfire occurred between Berry and law enforcement officers. Officers shot Berry during the encounter.
Berry was pronounced dead at the scene.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) was requested to investigate the shooting. As of the latest publicly available information, no officers involved have been publicly identified, and no public prosecutorial findings or determination regarding the use of deadly force have been released.
