OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
n February 28, 2022, Topsham Police, along with responding Maine State Police and Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office deputies, responded to a report of a woman stopped on the side of Route 196 on the Topsham Bypass near the Merrymeeting Bridge who was allegedly making suicidal and homicidal statements and possibly armed. Officers attempted to communicate and de-escalate. According to the Maine Attorney General’s Office, video and investigative reports show Sherwood held a pistol, and at least one shot was fired from her vehicle toward officers. Topsham Police Officer Mathew Bowers discharged his duty weapon, striking Sherwood. Sherwood was transported to Maine Medical Center in critical condition and died from a gunshot wound to the head the following day. The Maine Attorney General later ruled the use of deadly force by Officer Bowers justified under state law. Sheriff’s and state investigators participated in the review. Body camera/dashcam footage was released by authorities to the public as part of the investigation. Family and public commentary noted concerns and the context of her mental health crisis.
