On February 28, 2022, Toledo Police Department officers initiated a pursuit of a vehicle driven by 35-year-old Michael Jackson, who failed to stop for a traffic violation, had warrants and a suspended license, and accelerated to high speeds. The chase reached in excess of 113 mph before Jackson’s vehicle collided with a work vehicle and rolled near the intersection of Alexis Road and Woodside Trail in Sylvania Township. Mohamed Souare, a pedestrian standing outside his truck speaking with a utility crew, was struck and killed by the fleeing vehicle. Jackson later entered a no-contest plea to aggravated vehicular homicide and related charges and was sentenced to prison. The victim’s family has filed a federal lawsuit alleging the police pursuit contributed to the crash and calling for a review of the department’s pursuit policy.
