On July 21, 2024, at approximately 12:41 p.m., Fort Collins Police Services (FCPS) officers responded to a single-vehicle rollover crash at the intersection of Bryan Avenue and Mountain Avenue. The crash ended with Clayton Pierce standing outside the vehicle with a firearm.

Police engaged Pierce in a shootout, and he fled on foot into Grandview Cemetery. Officers pursued him into the cemetery, where another exchange of gunfire occurred. The Fort Collins Police Services Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit's armored rescue vehicle arrived on scene. Officers approached the injured Pierce and rendered aid. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The officer who was shot sustained a gunshot wound to his arm and was treated and released. The Larimer County Sheriff's Office is the lead investigating agency for the case.

On September 25, 2024, the Larimer County District Attorney's Office released the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) opinion letter, declaring that the officers' actions were justified.
