On February 17, 2025, at approximately 10:48 p.m., a Pierce County deputy observed a Tesla traveling eastbound on 128th Street East in Puyallup at speeds exceeding 100 mph. The deputy initiated a pursuit without activating lights and sirens but soon lost sight of the vehicle. Shortly thereafter, the deputy discovered the Tesla had veered off the road, crashed through a fence, struck three large trees, and caught fire in the backyard of a residence in the 7000 block of 128th Street East. The deputy attempted to rescue the 45-year-old male driver by breaking the driver's side window but was forced to retreat due to the intensifying flames. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. No other individuals were injured, and the fire was contained to the vehicle.

On February 17, 2025, at approximately 1:35 PM, Justin M. Barbour, 28, of Crozet, Virginia, opened fire in the parking lot of the Harris Teeter grocery store located at 545 Radford Lane. Barbour first shot 43-year-old Peter L. Martin, who was exiting the store, and then 68-year-old Diane G. Spangler, who was seated in her car. Martin was pronounced dead at the scene, while Spangler was transported to UVA Medical Center in critical condition and later succumbed to her injuries. An off-duty federal law enforcement officer, who was exiting the store, engaged Barbour with their personal weapon, fatally shooting him at the scene. The officer was uninjured. Investigators determined that Barbour had no prior affiliation with either victim or the location. He fired 28 rounds within 20 seconds.
