On February 27, 2022, 65-year-old Vickie Berry was driving along State Road 67 in Mooresville, Indiana, when her life was violently cut short by a high-speed police chase. Berry, who was simply traveling down the road, was struck by a vehicle involved in the chase that was reaching speeds of 110 miles per hour. The impact caused Berry’s car to burst into flames, leaving her no chance of survival. Another individual, Jason Howard, also suffered fatal injuries in the crash.
The pursuit was initiated by the Mooresville Police Department, which continued chasing the suspect at dangerous speeds through town. The high-speed pursuit ended in catastrophe when Berry's car was struck, resulting in her immediate death at the scene. In the aftermath, Berry’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Town of Mooresville, challenging the police department’s decision to engage in a high-speed chase that put innocent lives at risk.
