OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 02/27/2022, Mooresville Police attempted to stop a vehicle on State Road 67 after officers identified the vehicle as stolen. The driver did not stop, and officers initiated a pursuit. According to reporting, the fleeing vehicle reached speeds of approximately 100 to 110 miles per hour as it traveled along State Road 67.
During the pursuit, the fleeing vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a vehicle driven by 65-year-old Vickie Berry. The crash caused a fire. Berry sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead. The driver of the fleeing vehicle, identified in reporting as Jason Howard, also died in the crash.
Following the incident, Berry’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Town of Mooresville, challenging the department’s decision to continue the high-speed pursuit on a public roadway.
