OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 02/27/2022, Mooresville Police attempted to stop a vehicle on State Road 67 after officers identified it as stolen. The driver, later identified as 44-year-old Jason Howard, did not stop. Police initiated a pursuit along State Road 67.
During the chase, the fleeing vehicle reached speeds reported to be over 100 miles per hour. While traveling southbound, the vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a vehicle driven by 65-year-old Vickie Berry. The crash caused both vehicles to ignite.
Jason Howard and Vickie Berry sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead. The Indiana State Police investigated the crash. In the months following the incident, Berry’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Town of Mooresville challenging the continuation of the high-speed pursuit.
