On 02/26/2022, Montgomery County Police Officer Antonio Copeland attempted to stop Noraly Paz Chavez, 26, in the North Bethesda area after observing driving behavior he believed indicated impairment. Chavez continued driving, and Copeland escalated a pursuit.
The chase continued until Chavez lost control of her vehicle and crashed. She sustained fatal injuries in the collision. Dashcam footage later released showed the officer driving at high speed during the pursuit, and audio captured music playing inside the patrol vehicle.
The Maryland Attorney General’s Office investigated the pursuit and the crash. In October 2022, prosecutors announced that Officer Copeland would not face criminal charges. Chavez’s family publicly questioned the necessity of the pursuit and sought accountability following her death.
