OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 02/26/2022, Fort Bend County deputies stopped a vehicle near the US 59 Service Road and 1st Street in Rosenberg because it matched the description of a vehicle involved in a reported hit-and-run. Deputies ordered 37-year-old Jacob Huerta to exit the vehicle. When he did not comply, deputies deployed a Taser.
According to the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office, Huerta exited the vehicle holding a knife and moved toward deputies. Deputies opened fire, striking him. He was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Two deputies were placed on administrative leave following the shooting, consistent with department policy. The Texas Rangers conducted the independent investigation into the use of force. Authorities later identified Huerta publicly. The names of the deputies who fired were not released in initial reporting.
