OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On February 22, 2022, Akron Police Department officers responded to a 911 call that ended abruptly at the intersection of Ritchie Avenue and Orrin Street in Akron, Ohio. Upon arrival, they encountered two men preparing to leave a residence. After handcuffing and questioning them, officers located the individual who had placed the 911 call. This person informed the officers that Lawrence LeJames Rodgers, a 21-year-old Black male, was inside the home armed with a gun and accompanied by another man. Rodgers emerged from the residence with both his hands and a weapon visible. In response, officers discharged their firearms, causing Rodgers to retreat back into the house. Subsequently, he reportedly shot the second individual inside before succumbing to the injuries sustained from the police shooting. The names of the eight Akron Police Department officers involved in this incident have not been publicly disclosed.
