OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/19/2024, Bakersfield Police Department officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 1900 block of Tulare Street. When the vehicle failed to stop, police escalated the situation into a vehicle pursuit. The vehicle eventually came to a stop, and a man fled on foot. Officers deployed drones to aid in the search and located the individual in the backyard of a nearby residence on the 2500 block of Pacific Drive. During the manhunt, the individual died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police stated that the initial reason for the pursuit was the failure to stop at the traffic stop but did not clarify the reasons for escalating the situation into a manhunt. The man had been unhoused.
