OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On July 17, 2024, at approximately 2:15 a.m., Greensboro Police Department officers observed a Nissan Altima traveling the wrong way on West Market Street near East Lake Drive. Officers attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle, driven by 14-year-old Canyon Saxton-Reese, did not stop. Officers escalated a chase that ended when the Altima collided head-on with a police patrol car at the intersection of Walker Avenue and Wicker Street. All three occupants of the Altima—14-year-old Canyon Saxton-Reese, 14-year-old Brandon Lenell Bowie, and 15-year-old Derrion Sonjay Legrand—were pronounced dead at the scene. The police officer was hospitalized with injuries and was reported to be in stable condition.
