On July 16, 2024, Camden County deputies pursued 42-year-old Michael Alan Smith, who was wanted in connection with a homicide in Florida. Smith fled across the Georgia state line, where Camden County Sheriff's deputies spotted his vehicle and initiated a high-speed pursuit. The chase ended when deputies performed a PIT maneuver, forcing Smith’s vehicle to crash.

Police allege that after the crash, Smith took his own life. Law enforcement described the circumstances as a suicide, with Smith reportedly under significant police pressure at the time.
