on July 13, 2024, Cody Wayne Ashley was driving a 2020 Nissan Maxima and was being pursued by police when the vehicle left the road, struck a utility pole and a tree, and overturned. The crash happened at approximately 2:49 a.m. on DeKalb County Road 248, about two miles south of Fort Payne. Ashley died at the scene. A 16-year-old passenger was injured and taken to the hospital for treatment. The pursuit was initiated by the Fort Payne Police Department. The case is under investigation by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Highway Patrol Division.
