On 07/10/2024, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies from the East LA Station pursued Luis Florez in connection with an alleged carjacking. The chase, lasting approximately 20 minutes, ended near Vermont and Venice when Florez crashed the vehicle into a pole. Deputies surrounded the vehicle as Florez attempted to reverse, tapping the bumper of a police car in the process. According to reports, Florez raised his hand out of the window in what appeared to be a gesture of surrender. Despite this, deputies fired multiple rounds into the car, fatally wounding him.
