On July 6, 2024, Union Parish deputies responded to a call about a distressed woman threatening self-harm on Louisiana Highway 549. The woman, later identified as 56-year-old Karla Valentine from Dry Prong, Louisiana, was reportedly armed and on the front steps of a residence when officers arrived. Authorities attempted to de-escalate the situation, but it escalated when Valentine allegedly fired at deputies. The deputies returned fire, striking Valentine. She was hospitalized and later transferred to Shreveport. The Northeast Louisiana Sheriff’s Investigative Unit is reviewing the incident.
