Agency : Athens Police Department; Ohio University Police Department; Athens County Special Response Team; Columbus Division of Fire Bomb Squad; Federal Bureau of Investigation; Athens County Sheriff’s Office
Officer(s) : Not Disclosed
Cause of Death : Suicide
Event : Suicide under police duress
OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
At approximately 1:20 p.m. on August 7, 2025, Athens Police officers responded to the Beasley Mill apartment complex at 93 West Union Street for reports of a shooting. Officers arrived to find a woman with gunshot wounds; she was stabilized and flown to a Columbus hospital. Witness statements and scene evidence led police to identify 70-year-old Joseph C. Jennings as the shooter, barricaded inside an apartment. A note recovered at the scene claimed there were explosives inside, triggering a full-scale tactical escalation.
Command activated the Athens County Special Response Team (SRT) and requested support from the Columbus Division of Fire Bomb Squad and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The bomb threat prompted a rapid evacuation of nearby buildings and cordoning of several blocks. Armored vehicles were positioned to shield entry teams and block all approaches. SRT operators in full tactical gear established layered perimeters, with sniper-observer teams covering all sightlines and shield-bearing breach units staged for immediate assault.
Negotiators bore down by phone and loudspeaker, but Jennings did not respond. The SRT maintained an aggressive, high-visibility posture while the bomb squad prepared for potential detonation mitigation, staging robots and specialized equipment outside the structure.
When continued silence indicated no movement inside, a drone equipped with live video feed was flown into the apartment under the cover of armed overwatch. The drone located Jennings unresponsive on the floor with a visible firearm. SRT entry teams moved in under ballistic protection, confirmed he had sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and secured the weapon. No explosives were found inside after a complete bomb squad sweep.
The scene was declared safe, and investigators began processing ballistic evidence, the threatening note, and all tactical video recordings.

Eli Cid Jr.
Age :30
Gender :Male
Race : Black

Location : 268 Remsen Street
City : Cohoes
County : Albany
State : New York
Agency : Cohoes Police Department; New York State Police Special Operations Response Team (SRT)
Officer(s) : Not Disclosed
Cause of Death : Suicide
Event : Suicide under police duress
OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On August 5, 2025, at approximately 9:20 p.m., Cohoes Police officers responded to 268 Remsen Street after a resident reported an altercation involving three individuals and a firearm. Officers immediately moved to contain the location, establishing a perimeter and securing the surrounding area to prevent escape or outside interference. At 11:20 p.m., a woman exited the residence and was taken into custody without incident.
Recognizing the continued armed threat inside, command requested the New York State Police Special Operations Response Team (SRT). At approximately 2:00 a.m. on August 6, the SRT deployed to the scene with armored vehicles, fully equipped tactical operators, and sniper-observer teams positioned to dominate all sightlines. Shield-equipped assault elements staged at the primary entry point while secondary breach teams and tactical medics prepared for an extended engagement.
Negotiations continued through the night as SRT maintained an aggressive posture—visible rifles, ballistic shields forward, and continuous illumination of the target residence with high-intensity tactical lighting. At 7:42 a.m., as SRT operators advanced with shields to tighten the containment cordon, Eli Cid Jr. allegedly fired a round toward the advancing troopers. One trooper returned a single shot before the team withdrew to reassess for safety and prevent escalation.
At 8:12 a.m., approximately 30 minutes later, SRT members heard a single gunshot from inside. Command ordered an immediate tactical entry. Shield-led assault teams breached and cleared the interior, locating Cid with a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound. The weapon was recovered next to the body.
The New York Attorney General’s Office has assumed investigative control, reviewing body-worn camera recordings, ballistic evidence, radio communication logs, and forensic reports. No officers discharged additional rounds after the initial exchange. The case remains under active review.

State : North Carolina

Cause of Death : Gunshot
Event : Killed by police during armed confrontation
OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/05/2025 at approximately 5:45 p.m., a Greensboro police officer was flagged down by a resident in the 1600 block of Marion Street regarding a man who was reportedly trespassing on nearby property. Officer Lewis J. Wyatt contacted the man, later identified as Said Ezzine, 48, and repeatedly instructed him to stop and speak with police. Ezzine ignored the commands and walked back onto the property.
During the encounter, Ezzine entered a shed and armed himself with a metal steering-wheel lock. He then returned to the shed, picked up a circular saw blade, and later armed himself with a large pipe wrench while continuing to ignore repeated commands to drop the weapons. Officer Wyatt briefly drew his Taser but did not deploy it.
As Ezzine advanced while armed, Officer Wyatt fired four rounds, striking him. Ezzine ran behind the residence before collapsing in the backyard. Officers immediately requested EMS and rendered medical aid, but Ezzine died at the scene.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation conducted the criminal investigation into the shooting. Officer Wyatt was placed on administrative duty pending the investigation. In May 2026, Guilford County District Attorney Avery Crump determined that Officer Wyatt's use of deadly force was legally justified under North Carolina law. The Greensboro Police Department also completed an internal administrative review and later released body-worn camera footage of the encounter.

Angel Montaño
Age :27
Gender :Male
Race : Latino/a/e
Date : 08/05/2025
Location : 400 block of First Street
City : Richmond
County : Contra Costa
State : California
Agency : Richmond Police Department, Contra Costa District Attorney’s Office
Officer(s) : Officers Nicholas Remick, Colton Stocking
Cause of Death : Gunshot
Event : Killed by police during domestic disturbance call
OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/04/2025 at approximately 5:00 p.m., Richmond police responded to a 911 call from family members reporting that Angel Montaño, 27, a U.S. Marine Corps reservist, was experiencing a mental health crisis inside a residence on the 400 block of 1st Street. The caller reported that Montaño was armed with multiple knives and had threatened to kill family members.
Officers Nicholas Remick and Colton Stocking entered the residence and encountered Montaño holding two knives. According to police and body-worn camera footage later released, officers repeatedly ordered him to drop the knives. Montaño moved toward the officers while still armed, and both officers fired their weapons, striking him multiple times. Officers rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived, but Montaño was pronounced dead at the scene.
Richmond Police Chief Bisa French stated that Montaño had a documented history of mental health struggles and that his family had been attempting to obtain treatment for him before calling 911. The department later released body-camera footage, 911 recordings, and additional investigative materials during a public briefing.
The Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office assumed the criminal investigation into the shooting, while the Richmond Police Department initiated an internal administrative review. Officer Nicholas Remick had previously been named in civil lawsuits alleging police misconduct, a history that drew additional public attention following the shooting. Civil rights attorney John Burris, representing the family, said this was the killing of a military veteran in crisis, not a violent threat.
.
Officer Nicholas Remick:
Remick was one of the two officers who killed Montaño. In February 2025, Remick and Officer Jessica Khalil fatally shot Jose Mendez-Rios, who they believed was armed but was holding only a knife sheath. The California Department of Justice is investigating that shooting under its protocol for unarmed-involved cases. Remick is also named in at least two federal lawsuits alleging excessive force, including a 2024 incident where he and another officer allegedly assaulted a civilian who was filming a police chase. Attorney John Burris noted that Remick has been involved in two shootings and a beating within a short span.

Police negotiators attempted to contact him by telephone several times without success. During the standoff, Robinson started a fire using gasoline, operated a chainsaw, and walked through the yard while armed with a handgun. He eventually knelt in the front yard, manually chambered a round in his 9 mm handgun, and raised the weapon. A Muncie Police SWAT officer fired one rifle round, striking Robinson in the chest. He was transported to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.
The Indiana State Police conducted the investigation. The Delaware County Coroner identified the decedent as Jesse Lee Robinson on August 4, 2025.

The New Mexico State Police investigated the in-custody death. The Taos County Sheriff's Office later released surveillance and lapel camera video of the incident after public requests for transparency.
