On 07/04/2024, Peoria County Sheriff's deputies and Canton Police pursued a group of teenagers in a vehicle reported stolen. The pursuit ended when the vehicle crashed near Interstate 474. During the ensuing foot chase, 14-year-old Leron Antonio Earl Griffin, a passenger in the vehicle, fled from officers. He was last seen running on the shoulder of I-474 before heading toward the Illinois River. Shortly after, Griffin's body was found floating in the river, where he allegedly drowned while attempting to cross.
