On 08/29/2024, at approximately 5:56 p.m., Amir Jordan, 19, was struck by a Cincinnati Police Department cruiser in the 4600 block of Este Avenue near Chickering Avenue in Cincinnati's Spring Grove Village. Jordan had just gotten off a Metro bus and was crossing Este Avenue when the police vehicle struck him. He was transported to University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.

The officer was driving north on Este Avenue in a marked 2021 Ford Explorer and was operating the cruiser in emergency-response mode. Cincinnati police said the officer had activated the cruiser's emergency lights and siren while responding to reports of a shooting in the Spring Grove Village area.

Police said Jordan had exited the Metro bus and crossed Este Avenue westbound in an area without a marked crosswalk. The police cruiser was traveling parallel to the bus before striking him. A witness independently confirmed hearing the cruiser's siren and seeing its emergency lights activated.

Jordan's family questioned whether additional safeguards should govern the speed and manner in which police drive through residential neighborhoods during emergency responses. His grandmother, Paula McClendon, said the family initially received little information from city or police officials and called for changes to police emergency-response protocols. Residents also pointed to the absence of a marked pedestrian crossing near the Metro bus stops at Este and Chickering avenues.

Jordan's father, Anthony Jordan, later said his son was crossing Este Avenue while on his way to visit him. He called for pedestrian-safety improvements at the location, including crosswalks, traffic controls or other measures. A crash report described the police vehicle as operating in emergency mode when it struck Jordan.

Jordan was born on 02/22/2005. His family described him as a loving and independent young man who had recently taken up karate. Funeral services were held on 09/09/2024 at New Prospect Baptist Church in Cincinnati.

Jordan's mother, Shenee McClendon, established a GoFundMe the day after his death to help pay his funeral and burial expenses. The fundraiser specifically identifies Jordan as her 19-year-old son and states that he was killed after being struck by the Cincinnati police cruiser.
