OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/27/2024, shortly before 6 a.m., Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents went to the Merida Apartments near Northeast Loop 410 and Starcrest Drive in San Antonio to execute a federal arrest warrant for Sina Chohili Sobby, 22.
.
The warrant was part of a coordinated federal firearms operation conducted at 14 locations in the San Antonio area and extending toward McAllen. The raids culminated a yearlong ATF investigation into an organization that federal authorities alleged was trafficking stolen firearms, machine guns and machine-gun conversion devices. Authorities said members of the organization intended to traffic firearms to Mexico. The operation was associated with the federal Operation Texas Kill Switch initiative targeting machine-gun conversion devices.
.
Federal authorities arrested 12 other people during the operation. Charges against those arrested included firearms trafficking, dealing firearms without a license, possession of stolen firearms and possession of machine guns. ATF reported seizing more than 200 firearms, including 14 machine guns and more than 60 machine-gun conversion devices. Authorities said six recovered firearms, including three machine guns, had previously been used in shootings in San Antonio.
.
Sobby was the subject of a court-authorized “knock and announce” federal arrest warrant. Federal authorities later confirmed that his attempted arrest was connected to the broader firearms-trafficking operation. Because Sobby was killed during execution of the warrant, any criminal allegations against him were never adjudicated in court.
.
A neighbor reported being awakened by agents shouting during the early-morning raid and described hearing an electronic beep followed by two loud explosive sounds. No evidence located indicates that Sobby caused those explosions, possessed explosives or detonated an explosive device. No credible reporting or federal statement located connects Sobby with a bombing or terrorism. The publicly identified investigation concerned firearms trafficking, stolen firearms, machine guns and machine-gun conversion devices, not terrorism or explosives offenses.
.
During the execution of the warrant, ATF alleges that Sobby pointed a firearm at members of the federal search team. An ATF agent then fired, striking and killing him. ATF's allegation that Sobby pointed a gun at agents has been repeated in subsequent reporting, but no publicly released video or independent eyewitness account located for this update independently establishes the circumstances immediately preceding the shooting.
.
Federal authorities therefore allege that Sobby was armed with a firearm when he was shot. The available public record does not establish that he possessed explosives, and no evidence located identifies him as a terrorist or connects him to a terrorist organization or terrorism investigation.
.
The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office identified the man killed by the ATF agent as Sina Chohili Sobby, 22. The San Antonio Police Department assumed responsibility for investigating the fatal shooting. The ATF agent who shot and killed Sobby was not publicly identified in the reporting located for this update.
.
Sobby's twin sister, Tina Sobby, subsequently established a fundraiser for funeral expenses and described her brother as a kind and generous person who helped support their father. Her account contrasted with federal authorities' allegation that Sobby was involved with the firearms-trafficking organization.
