On August 27, 2024, San Diego Police Department officers escalated a high-speed pursuit of a vehicle reportedly seen speeding. The pursuit reached high speeds before officers allegedly called off the chase moments before a catastrophic crash. The fleeing vehicle, driven by 16-year-old Edgar Giovanny Oviedo, collided with another vehicle near Doliva Drive and Clairemont Mesa Boulevard. Tragically, both Oviedo and San Diego officer Austin Machitar were killed in the crash. Despite police claims of calling off the pursuit, the crash resulted in a fatal outcome for both the juvenile driver and the officer. The San Diego Police Department is investigating the incident.
