Police responded to the America’s Best Value Inn in McKinney to arrest a person wanted on warrants. Upon arrival, officers confronted the individual, who allegedly opened fire, killing a police K-9 named Vito. Police returned fire and killed the person at the scene. On March 8, 2025, at approximately 7:10 p.m., 54-year-old Russell David Payne drove to a residence on Wood Station Road in Rock Spring, Georgia, where his estranged wife, Jacklyn D. Payne, was residing with her father, Eugene "Jack" Denny. Payne fired multiple rounds into the rear of the house before entering and fatally shooting both Jacklyn and Eugene. Off-duty Chickamauga Police Officer Charles "Chuck" Dunn, a longtime family friend present at the scene, attempted to intervene and was critically injured during the confrontation. Payne then died by suicide at the scene. Officer Dunn was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on March 13, 2025. The Walker County Sheriff's Office is conducting an ongoing investigation into the incident.
