OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/22/2024, Brian Lavon Battle, 29, was killed while standing with Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers on the shoulder of I-485 near Mount Holly Road. Shortly after 8:15 a.m., Battle reported a stolen vehicle and officers responded to investigate the vehicle on the interstate shoulder.

At approximately 10:15 a.m., while officers were still investigating, an uninvolved motorhome traveling on I-485 left its travel path and struck two CMPD patrol vehicles and Battle. One patrol vehicle and the motorhome went down an embankment. Battle was pronounced dead at the scene. One officer was pinned inside a patrol vehicle and was transported to a hospital, while a second officer and the motorhome driver were also hospitalized.

CMPD identified the motorhome driver as Robert Erwin Reiser, 80. Following further investigation by CMPD's Major Crash Investigation Unit, Reiser was charged on 10/10/2024 with misdemeanor death by vehicle and misdemeanor assault inflicting serious injury in connection with the crash that killed Battle and injured an officer.

The fatal crash was investigated by CMPD's Major Crash Investigation Unit with assistance from the department's DWI Task Force, Motor Unit and Crime Scene Search. The case was assigned report number 20240822-1015-05, while the original stolen-vehicle call was documented under report number 20240822-0817-02.
