On July 18, 2024, at approximately 9:35 a.m., deputies from the Montezuma County Sheriff's Office responded to a welfare check at 37813 Road M, north of Mancos, Colorado. The call was made by John Thompson's sister, who expressed concern for her disabled mother, Thompson's elderly mother, residing with him. Earlier that morning, at 6:45 a.m., the La Plata County Sheriff's Office attempted to locate Thompson after he reportedly pointed a gun at a La Plata County resident and fled in a gray Dodge pickup truck. Upon arrival, deputies observed Thompson in the driveway. He approached his gray Dodge pickup, retrieved a large-caliber rifle, and advanced toward the deputies in a threatening manner. In response, deputies discharged their firearms, striking Thompson. Despite immediate medical aid, Thompson, 42, succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Neither deputy was injured during the incident. The 22nd Judicial District Attorney's Office later cleared the deputies of potential charges, determining that criminal charges against them were not warranted. The officers were cleared.

on July 13, 2024, Cody Wayne Ashley was driving a 2020 Nissan Maxima and was being pursued by police when the vehicle left the road, struck a utility pole and a tree, and overturned. The crash happened at approximately 2:49 a.m. on DeKalb County Road 248, about two miles south of Fort Payne. Ashley died at the scene. A 16-year-old passenger was injured and taken to the hospital for treatment. The pursuit was initiated by the Fort Payne Police Department. He observed a black Chevrolet pickup truck accelerating rapidly, causing its tires to spin and the vehicle to fishtail. Deputy Geeting initiated a pursuit as the truck sped away on gravel roads, often outpacing the deputy's vehicle. The pursuit continued with the truck leaving visible spin marks and fishtail tracks, which Deputy Geeting used to follow. Despite multiple attempts to stop the vehicle, the driver, identified as 38-year-old Michael Lee Penland II of White Cloud, Michigan, continued to flee. The chase concluded when Penland's truck collided with a large tree, resulting in his death at the scene.

On July 12, 2024, at approximately 10:53 a.m., two Detroit Police Department officers were dispatched to assist a 36th District Court bailiff with an eviction at an apartment in the 17650 block of Manderson Road. The bailiff reported that the tenant, 44-year-old Sherman Lee Butler, was being aggressive. Upon entry, officers found Butler sitting on a bed, holding a box cutter to his neck. He was highly agitated and refused to leave, stating that he would only depart if officers used weapons to kill him. Despite multiple instructions to drop the box cutter, Butler remained uncooperative. Officers deployed Tasers, which failed to subdue him. Butler then advanced toward the bailiff with the box cutter, prompting the bailiff to discharge his firearm, striking Butler. Butler continued toward an officer, leading the bailiff to fire additional shots. Officers administered aid, and Butler was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
