On 08/22/2024, an unidentified man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a SWAT standoff at the Horizon Extended Stay, 1385 Old McDonough Highway in Conyers. The confrontation began on the evening of August 21 when members of the U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force, assisted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office, went to the motel to execute a felony murder warrant originating from a Crawford County homicide investigation.

The man barricaded himself inside a motel room as law enforcement surrounded the building. Authorities reported that shots were fired at law enforcement during the attempt to execute the warrant. Rockdale County officials initially received information that a deputy had been grazed by a bullet, but later clarified that the deputy had been struck by sheetrock rather than gunfire.

The standoff continued for several hours. Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office SWAT officers eventually entered the building and found the man with what authorities described as an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was dead when officers reached him shortly before 1:00 a.m. on August 22.
