OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/22/2024, Vernon Cornelious Randle Jr., 27, was shot and killed during an encounter with Alton police near East 6th and Liberty streets. Police were searching for Randle after alleging that he shot and wounded a woman who was sitting in a vehicle in the 2300 block of East Broadway the previous night. At approximately 5:00 a.m., officers spotted Randle near Ninth and Henry streets and pursued him on foot.

The foot pursuit continued to the area of East 6th and Liberty streets. A neighborhood witness reported hearing an officer warn Randle to stop moving or the police dog would bite him, followed shortly afterward by numerous gunshots. According to Illinois State Police and Alton police, officers and Randle exchanged gunfire during the confrontation.

Alton Police Officer Allen Averbeck was shot during the encounter. His body armor prevented more serious injury. Averbeck's police dog, Odin, was also shot and subsequently died at a veterinary hospital. Randle was struck by police gunfire and transported to St. Louis University Hospital, where he died at 6:55 a.m.

Illinois State Police investigated the police use of force at the request of the Alton Police Department.

Allen Averbeck was identified as the Alton police officer involved in the gunfire and was Odin's handler. Averbeck was shot during the encounter and released from the hospital later that day.
