On 08/22/2024, Juan Diego Contreras, 22, was shot and killed by a Weslaco police officer at a residence in the 700 block of Pueblo Street. At approximately 11:28 p.m., Weslaco police officers responded to a report of shots fired at the location.

When officers arrived, they encountered Contreras at the residence. According to Weslaco Police Chief Joel Rivera, Contreras appeared heavily intoxicated and spoke aggressively toward officers. Police alleged that Contreras had access to a shotgun during the encounter.

According to Rivera and the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office, Contreras turned toward an officer and raised or reached for the shotgun. The officer fired, striking Contreras. Officers provided medical aid before Contreras was transported by ambulance to Knapp Medical Center, where he died.

The shooting officer was placed on paid administrative leave. Weslaco police requested that the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Unit and crime-scene specialists conduct the investigation into the fatal shooting.

A local justice of the peace ordered an autopsy. The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office continued the criminal investigation into the shooting.
