OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/21/2024, Alex Gonzalez Jr., 30, was shot and killed by Hialeah police officers during a domestic violence response at a home in the 4200 block of West 5th Court. At approximately 4:25 a.m., officers were dispatched after reports that multiple people had been stabbed inside the residence.
.
When officers arrived, they encountered one injured woman outside the house and entered to locate additional victims. Police found two more women suffering from stab wounds inside. The victims were Gonzalez's mother, Madelyne Gonzalez, his grandmother, Rosa Gonzalez, and his 17-year-old sister, Amanda Gonzalez. Madelyne Gonzalez died from her injuries, while Rosa and Amanda survived.
.
According to Hialeah police and the subsequent Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office investigation, Gonzalez remained inside the residence armed with a knife while officers attempted to remove and assist the injured women. Police alleged that Gonzalez ignored commands to drop the knife and confronted the officers while still holding it. Officers then fired, striking and killing Gonzalez.
.
Body-camera footage of the encounter was publicly released in January 2026, approximately 17 months after the shooting. The footage documents officers entering the residence, locating the seriously injured women and encountering Gonzalez. Portions depicting the actual police gunfire were redacted from the publicly released video.
.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigated the police shooting. The completed investigation was subsequently reviewed by the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office. On 12/21/2025, State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle signed a close-out memorandum concluding that the officers' use of deadly force was legally justified.
.
Family members told reporters that Gonzalez had experienced mental health problems before the incident. Relatives described the violence as shocking and said they did not understand what precipitated the attack.
