OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/22/2024, Michael John Davies, 58, died after being shot by Layton police during a mental health crisis outside his home at 2873 W. Lindi Way. The encounter began shortly after 9:40 p.m. on August 21 when Davies' wife called 911 and reported that her husband was suicidal and had a gun.

Police contacted Davies' wife by telephone and directed her to leave the residence and meet officers farther down the street. Davies remained inside the house while officers and crisis negotiators communicated with him intermittently for approximately 40 minutes.

According to Layton police, Davies made statements during the negotiations indicating that he intended to force a confrontation with officers. Police also reported that an officer heard a gunshot from inside the residence, although investigators initially did not know where the shot had been directed or what it struck.

Police alleged that Davies eventually came through the front door carrying both a rifle and a pistol. Multiple officers then fired at Davies, striking him. Officers provided medical aid before Davies was transported in critical condition to Holy Cross Hospital in Layton, where he died.

Davies was originally from Adelaide, Australia, and grew up in England. He had served in the British Army before eventually moving to the United States in 2012. He was survived by his wife, five children, two stepchildren and nine grandchildren.

The Davis County Critical Incident Protocol Team investigated the police shooting, and the involved officers were placed on administrative leave following the incident.
