On 08/21/2024, Karisma Elivo-Stevens, 29, and her 10-year-old daughter, Zamiyah Elivo, were killed when their Dodge Grand Caravan was struck by a Kia K5 whose driver had driven away from a Delaware State Police traffic stop approximately 12 minutes earlier.

At approximately 11:08 p.m., a Delaware state trooper stopped the Kia in the 100 block of South Dupont Highway. The Kia's driver drove away from the traffic stop. Delaware State Police stated that the trooper lost sight of the Kia shortly afterward and that police did not actively pursue it.

Delaware State Police did not disclose in its public releases the reason the trooper initially stopped the Kia.

At approximately 11:20 p.m., Karisma was stopped at a traffic light on eastbound Christiana Road at Airport Road with her five daughters in the minivan. When the traffic signal permitted her to turn left onto Airport Road, she entered the intersection. Police said the Kia approached westbound at high speed, went through a red light and struck the passenger side of Karisma's minivan.

The impact caused the minivan to spin and roll over. Karisma and Zamiyah were pronounced dead at the scene. Karisma's four other daughters, ages 8, 5, 3 and 1, were hospitalized with injuries. The Kia subsequently crossed a concrete median and struck a Hyundai Tucson, seriously injuring its driver.

The Kia's driver was arrested after receiving hospital treatment and charged with two counts of second-degree murder, possession of a deadly weapon during commission of a felony, disregarding a police officer signal and failure to stop at a red light.
