On 08/20/2024, Patrice Hughes, 47, was killed in a five-vehicle crash at Kirby Parkway and East Raines Road during a Memphis Police Department pursuit. Hughes was traveling in a Chevrolet Malibu with family members when the vehicle was struck during the crash.

The pursuit began at approximately 9:45 p.m. near Getwell Road and Cottonwood Road. Police attempted to stop a black Chrysler 300 because officers recognized it as a vehicle reported stolen during an armed robbery the previous day at the Shadowbrook apartment complex. Police alleged that multiple armed people had taken the Chrysler during the robbery, and information about the stolen vehicle had been broadcast to officers.

Police attempted to stop the Chrysler after officers spotted it, but the 16-year-old driver continued driving away. Officers pursued before losing sight of the vehicle. The Chrysler subsequently reached Kirby Parkway and East Raines Road, where police said the driver went through a red light at high speed and caused a five-vehicle collision.

The Chrysler struck the Chevrolet Malibu carrying Hughes and members of her family. The collision triggered a violent, fiery chain-reaction crash involving several vehicles. Hughes, her daughter Dantrice L. Stanback, 26, and their relative Shekila Dysha Sivley, 26, were killed. Several other people were injured, including a 2-year-old girl.

The 16-year-old driver was initially charged as a juvenile with aggravated robbery, evading arrest with a vehicle and possession of a prohibited weapon described as a machine gun. He was later identified as Erian Watkins after the case was transferred to adult court. In 2025, Watkins faced three counts of reckless vehicular homicide along with robbery, aggravated assault, evading arrest and other charges arising from the incident.
