A Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper discovered an overturned vehicle off North Service Road near a sharp curve and requested assistance from the St. Clair Police Department and emergency medical personnel. This was not a traffic stop or police pursuit; law enforcement encountered Redondo-Zelaya because of the crash.

According to police, a St. Clair officer approached the overturned vehicle and saw Redondo-Zelaya inside holding a knife. Police alleged that the officer repeatedly ordered him to drop the knife. Redondo-Zelaya crawled out of the wrecked vehicle and began walking toward the officer while still holding the knife. The officer backed away while continuing to order him to drop it.
