On 08/17/2024, Nathan Savage, 45, of Auburn died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during an armed police manhunt that began on Essex Street in Lewiston late Saturday night and continued into the early hours of August 18.

At approximately 11:30 p.m., Lewiston police received multiple 911 calls reporting a man with a gun on Essex Street. Witnesses told police that the man was firing the gun before officers arrived, although available reporting did not establish what he was allegedly shooting at.

According to Lewiston police, Savage allegedly fired toward officers when they arrived and then ran into nearby woods. Lewiston police officers did not return fire. Officers established a perimeter and began searching for him.

The response expanded to include Auburn Police Department, Lisbon Police Department, Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office and Maine State Police. The Maine State Police Tactical Team and crisis negotiators were called to assist with the operation.

At approximately 3:30 a.m. on August 18, police located Savage dead in the woods from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. A handgun was recovered near his body. His body was transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner.
