OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On August 17, 2024, at approximately 2:30 p.m., Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) attempted to stop a motorcycle driven by 34-year-old Joseph Nehemiah Powell of Orange Park, Florida, for displaying no tag on Interstate 10 in Washington County. Powell fled. Police initiating a high-speed pursuit that reached speeds up to 142 mph. The chase continued into Jackson County, where Powell exited onto State Road 71. Attempting to navigate the exit, he lost control and crashed. Powell was pronounced dead at the scene. The motorcycle was unregistered, uninsured, and Powell lacked a driver's license and motorcycle endorsement, the reasons for the fatal chase. FHP's Traffic Homicide Division is investigating.
