OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/16/2024, Casey Fields, 13, was killed while riding in the back seat of a Mercury Sable being pursued by Blythe Police Officer Thomas Ray on Deans Bridge Road. His older brother, Barry Fields Jr., 15, was riding in the front passenger seat.

The pursuit began at approximately 7:53 p.m. when Ray clocked the Mercury traveling 71 mph in a 55-mph zone and attempted to stop it for speeding. The driver continued driving and Ray pursued.

As the Mercury approached Bath Edie Road, it entered the southbound lanes while continuing north against traffic. Georgia State Patrol reported that Ray discontinued the pursuit rather than following the Mercury into the wrong-way lanes.

Approximately one mile later, the Mercury struck a southbound pickup truck head-on near Etterlee Road and caught fire. Casey, Barry and driver Marcus Dunbar, 19, died in the crash.
