OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/13/2024, shortly before 9:00 a.m., Palmetto police responded to the 700 block of 8th Street West after receiving a report that 47-year-old Daniel McClelland was experiencing a mental health crisis. According to police, the caller warned that McClelland had a firearm and had stated he would force officers to shoot him if they responded.
Officers parked nearby and approached the residence. Police said McClelland initially retreated inside the home before returning outside carrying a rifle. According to investigators, he pointed the rifle toward officers. At least one officer fired, striking McClelland. Officers rendered first aid until EMS arrived, and he was transported to a hospital, where he died later that day.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement opened an independent investigation, and the State Attorney's Office was notified to review the shooting under Florida procedure. The officer who fired was placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation. No later public reporting identified the officer, announced criminal charges, civil litigation, or other significant investigative findings.
