OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/14/2024, at approximately 2:25 p.m., a deputy with the St. Francois County Sheriff's Department attempted to stop an older-model Ford passenger car traveling near southbound U.S. Highway 67 and the Old Orchard Road exit, south of Bonne Terre. The sheriff's department reported only that the deputy was attempting a traffic stop; no public source has identified the reason the deputy initially attempted to stop King's vehicle. King continued driving away while the deputy pursued with emergency lights and siren activated.
The pursuit exited U.S. Highway 67 at Old Orchard Road and ended near the northbound entrance ramp. After stopping, King reversed into the deputy's marked patrol vehicle, striking it. According to the sheriff's department, King then reversed a second time, again hitting the patrol vehicle. As the deputy exited his patrol vehicle and gave commands, King again placed the vehicle in reverse and drove backward toward the deputy. The deputy fired, striking King. Assisting officers arrived and provided medical aid until St. Francois County EMS transported King to Mercy Jefferson Hospital. He was later transferred to a St. Louis hospital, where he died from his injuries.
At the request of the St. Francois County Sheriff's Department, the Missouri State Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control conducted the independent investigation into the shooting. The case was to be forwarded to the St. Francois County Prosecuting Attorney upon completion of the investigation for review.
A search for subsequent developments through 2026 found no publicly reported prosecutor's charging decision, no public identification of the deputy who fired, no announced civil lawsuit or settlement involving King's death, and no later release of body-camera or dash-camera footage. The Missouri State Highway Patrol remains the primary publicly identified investigative agency in the case.
