OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/13/2024, officers with the Owensboro Police Department, assisted by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and IRS Criminal Investigation, executed multiple search and arrest warrants as part of a long-term narcotics investigation involving methamphetamine, fentanyl, cocaine, and firearms trafficking. One of the warrants targeted 46-year-old Timothy R. Roberts at a residence near Farmview Drive and Todd Court.
When officers attempted to serve the arrest warrant, Roberts barricaded himself inside a camper located in the driveway of the residence. The standoff lasted nearly five hours while the Owensboro Police Department Emergency Response Team attempted to negotiate with him. During the standoff, nearby Burns Elementary and Burns Middle School implemented safety measures because of the police operation. At approximately 4:15 p.m., Roberts sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Emergency Response Team members and EMS personnel provided lifesaving treatment before he was transported to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital, where he later died. The Daviess County Coroner ruled the death a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
One week later, federal authorities announced the results of the broader investigation that led to the warrant operation. A federal grand jury returned five indictments charging 37 defendants in Kentucky and California with methamphetamine, fentanyl, cocaine trafficking, firearms, and money laundering offenses. Owensboro police stated the operation was intended to dismantle a large drug trafficking organization rather than conduct isolated street-level arrests.
