OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On August 11, 2024, at approximately 1:20 a.m., a 911 caller reported a man waving a "machine gun" near a Verizon store at the intersection of Lexington Road and Gaines School Road in Athens, Georgia. Athens-Clarke County Police officers arrived and identified 26-year-old Marquavious Sims armed at the location. Upon seeing the officers, Sims fled across the street into the QuikTrip gas station parking lot. Officers pursued him on foot, repeatedly commanding him to drop the weapon.

According to police, Sims turned and fired at the officers. Two officers opened fire on him and struck him a number of times. Sims was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting. Upon completion, the findings will be submitted to the Clarke County District Attorney’s Office for review.

Family members have requested the release of body camera footage, expressing doubts about the police narrative. They assert that witnesses claim Sims did not fire at officers at all and allege that he was shot in the back. The family seeks clarity and transparency regarding the circumstances of his death.
