On 08/06/2024, members of the United States Marshals Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force and Illinois Department of Natural Resources officers located 40-year-old Floyd D. Caudill at the Lake Glendale Campground in Pope County while attempting to serve an Indiana felony arrest warrant. Caudill had recently been convicted by a Warrick County, Indiana jury on child molestation charges and failed to appear for sentencing after being released on bond, prompting the warrant for his arrest. Investigators tracked him to a tent at the campground and established contact, directing him to surrender. Caudill refused to come out. According to Illinois State Police, a shot was fired from inside the tent toward the officers. A Deputy U.S. Marshal returned fire. After the shooting, officers entered the tent and found Caudill dead. Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 7 assumed responsibility for investigating the fatal shooting at the request of the U.S. Marshals Service. Publicly available reporting did not identify the Deputy U.S. Marshal who fired the fatal shot
